South African Autumn!!!

I am out of town right now, relaxing on the couch of my Oma’s/Opa’s. Eating sauerkraut (yum!) and watching 4 generations of ladies hanging out. Family. Fun times. But I have a great friend who I asked to guest post today. Her name is Kerstin and lives in Cape Town, South Africa. I asked her to give us an idea of what a typical South African Fall is like. Please give her tons of awesome comments!

Hi there, this is Kerstin. I am a German long term missionary in South Africa.
When I think of Fall or Autumn, Herfs (africaans) or uKwindla (xhosa) as they call it here, I want to help you understand HOW different it is here in Cape Town.
Cape Town is the most southern big city in all of Africa. I live south to the equator  in the southern hemisphere. Thus my fall/autumn/herfs/ukwindla looks quite different. I call my Fall: Spring. I know, it’s getting complicated. Please hang in there. For everyone who lives north to the equator (USA, Europe, Russia, Canada etc).

Fall is the season before winter. When the leaves fall from the trees, we can see fall in its full glory. Fall brings cooler temperatures and fall prepares nature for winter. Now, it is getting confusing: this is pretty much the same for us living in the southern hemisphere EXCEPT that our Fall functions like a Spring. Our Fall prepares nature for Summer. Yes we have Summer during Christmas time. I still need to get used to that one lol.
Our Fall shows warmer temperatures and lots of colors. It begins in the late September, early October weeks.
In South Africa we celebrate the 1.st of September as Spring Day and in October all the flowers blossom. What a great season here!
We have warm days and cool nights. Every day, I can see more vibrant colors and I looooooooove colors. I am an artist, so colors inspire me.
It is said that the Western Cape (the region around Cape Town) has the widest range of flowers and plants. Incredible. For anyone who is extremely allergic (pollen), this season is not such a happy one 🙁
So YES: Fall is my Spring. Fall-Autumn-Herfs-uKwindla!
What do I like to do in this season here in South Africa?
-getting in my car and driving around to stand in awe of the beatuy of nature that is unfolding before my eyes
-starting to sun bathe again ( I have fair skin  and I KNOW how to protect myself after several experiences… – the sun here is extremely aggressive!)
– listening to the birds and watching them
My car  Snowflake starts to be hot again even with the amateur AC I start to cook in it…and I can leave my windows open overnight hehe.
I loooooove Fall in South Africa!! Here, the colors are green, red, magenta, fuchsio, teal, yellow, bright orange and yellow…amazing!!!

Hawaiian Autumn!!

I am out of town right now, relaxing on the couch of my Oma’s/Opa’s. Eating sauerkraut (yum!) and watching 4 generations of ladies hanging out. Family. Fun times. But I have a great friend who I asked to guest post today. Her name is Melissa and together with her husband, they suffer by living in beautiful Hawaii, raising their two adorable princesses on the sandy beaches. Horrible, I know. I asked her to give us an idea of what a typical Hawaiian Fall is like. Please give her tons of awesome comments!

The word autumn always makes me think of beautiful yellow and red leaves, crisp air, the smell of burning leave piles, and apple pie. Those are the things that I miss the most, living in Hawaii. But there is something to be said about a nice balmy breeze, the smell of plumeria in the air, and of course sunshine, that warms you to the bone. Autumn is actually my favorite season in Hawaii, summer can be too humid, spring my allergies annoy me, winter is great too, but we are talking about autumn.

Autumn in Hawaii is filled with the trade winds, and my favorite, rain. I love waking up in the morning and discovering that there is torrential rain outside. I love to curl up on my lanai (balcony) and just watch the rain come down. Everything gets so quiet, and where we live you can see waves of water moving down the street.

Maybe the best part about Hawaii in autumn is that we can still go swimming, in the pool, or my personal favorite, the beach! There may be things to miss about a mainland autumn, like hot cocoa and reading in front of the fire place, but in Hawaii I stay tan year round.

DIY: Fabric Flower Necklace

This DIY project is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a loooong time. It’s simple, beautiful and my favorite part is that you can customize it to your liking. Many more will be made.

16794027708.jpg

Lots of awesome pictures are coming…get a favorite drink in hand and be ready for some eye candy. 🙂

Fist you need to get some fabulous cheap fabric. For this just one reason I am crazy about Jo Ann’s.

16794195046.jpg

Next cut a felt circle and trace it on the back side of any fabric you want to make a flower of. It’s so the fabric and felt circles are the same size. Looks better that way.

16794230300.jpg

Now after cutting circles, take one and fold it twice. So it looks like this:

16794286551.jpg

Then just start sticking them on the felt circle. One at a time till you get yourself a flower!

Forgot to take a picture of a finished flower. Whoops. I got too caught up in the creating. Really. You can kinda see it on the right side of the picture above.

But Emma did take a couple pictures while I was making the necklace. My ‘craft table’ with tons of scraps, hot glue and smelly candles. Cutting the circles took the most time.

16794583996.jpg

Next, once your flower is complete, you want to slather the backside with hot glue.

16794488114.jpg

And before you put it down on more felt, you want to attach a long piece of chain. This way, the necklace chain is secure, in between two pieces of felt. Picture shows better than I could explain.

16794497652.jpg

Does that make more sense now? Hope so. So now you have your necklace and it’s almost done!

16794531053.jpg

Just cut away the felt from the flowers an that’s it!

16794568974.jpg

Emma really wanted one…and I can’t say no to Emma wanting to do crafts. So this was created:

Let me know if you try it! 🙂

Day 18: something orange

I have decided to join some other bloggers to do a 30 day challenge. We are following a fun list of things to take a picture of every day for a month. It would be awesome to have you join in on the fun! Just let me know so I can follow ya. 🙂

Day 18: something orange
16877449709.jpgHad to. It’s October. It’s fall. So my ‘orange’ is our pumpkins. I felt really bad not going to the pumpkin patch this year. Like we were not allowing Emma the opportunity to have the experience. But the more I thought about it, I realized that I would rather have her remember fall as crisp walks together, caramel apples, carving pumpkins with daddy, getting to wear new scarves/hats and getting her own hot drinks at Starbucks. All of which we’ve done…except the caramel apples….must take care of that this weekend with OMA!!! 🙂
Happy Fall everyone, which traditions or memories do you want to leave your kids about fall?

DIY: Rock Hot Pad

16857648176.jpg

I saw these hot pads on pinterest and thought, ‘YES!’ I  actually got so excited I showed Travis and told him, ‘I’m doing this tomorrow!’

16857816844.jpg

The felt and stones from dollar store. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

It was like playing tetris. Fun. 🙂 I made two, one for those big casserole dishes and the other a circle.

Let me know if you do this 🙂

DIY: Art Frame for refrigerator

16858195792.jpg

Easy cute frame for the fridge to display your kids art. I’m sure you could make this more cute and boutique-y. But I wanted to keep it bright and kid-ish. I wanted Emma to be happy it framed it art. It is after all for her, not me. 🙂
